And His saying: ( And forgive my father, indeed he was of the misguided ) is like His saying: ( Our Lord, forgive me and my parents ) [ Ibrahim: 41 ], and this is what Ibrahim, peace be upon him, turned away from, as Allah, the Exalted, said: ( And Ibrahim's asking forgiveness for his father was only for a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him. Indeed, Ibrahim was forbearing and grieving ) [ At-Tawbah: 114 ]. And Allah, the Exalted, cut off the allowance in seeking forgiveness for his father, saying: ( There has certainly been for you in Ibrahim and those with him an excellent example when they said to their people, 'Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from what you worship besides Allah. We have rejected you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone' - except for the saying of Ibrahim to his father, 'I will ask forgiveness for you, but I have nothing for you from Allah ) [ Al-Mumtahana: 4 ].
