جزء 14
سورة الحجر
The scholars of interpretation differed in the meaning of the seven that Allah brought to His Prophet, peace be upon him, from the Mutashabihat (often translated as 'the second'). Some of them said that the seven refer to the seven long chapters of the Quran known for their length, and those who say this have different opinions regarding what Mutashabihat are. Some of them would say that these seven are the Mutashabihat, and they were called that because examples, news, and lessons are reiterated within them.

Muhammad bin Sa'ad reported: He said: My father told me, he said: My uncle told me, he said: My father told me, from his father, from Ibn Abbas, who said: Al-Mathani refers to what has been mentioned in the Quran. Have you not heard the saying of Allah, the Exalted in His remembrance: "Allah has sent down the best of speech, a Book that is consistent and repeated."
I was informed about Al-Husayn, who said: I heard Abu Mu’adh say: Our teacher, Ubaid, said: I heard Al-Dahhak say: The "Muthani" refers to the Quran, which mentions the same story multiple times. This is indicated by His saying: "He has revealed the best of stories, a Book that is consistent and repeats themes."
The most accurate opinion regarding this matter is the statement of those who said: the seven repeated verses refer to the seven verses that are the verses of the Mother of the Book, based on the authentic narration from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, as narrated by Yazid ibn Makhlad al-Wasiti, who said: Khalid ibn Abdullah narrated to us, from Abdurrahman ibn Ishaq, from al-Alaa, from his father, from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "The Mother of the Book is the seven repeated verses that I have been given."
I was told by Ahmad ibn al-Muqdam al-Ajli, who said: Yazid ibn Zurai reported to us, who said: Ruh ibn al-Qasim reported to us, from his father, from Abu Huraira, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to Ubay: "Indeed, I love to teach you a Surah that has not been revealed in the Torah nor in the Gospel nor in the Psalms nor in the Criterion like it." He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "I hope that you will not leave this door until you learn it." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, took my hand and started talking to me, and I kept slowing down for fear that he would reach the door before the talk was finished. When I got close, I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the Surah you promised me? He said: "What do you recite in prayer?" So I recited Umm al-Qur'an to him, and he said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, nothing has been revealed in the Torah nor in the Gospel nor in the Psalms nor in the Criterion like it. Indeed, it is the seven from the Mathani and the Great Qur'an that I have been given."
Abu Kuraib narrated to us, he said: Zayd ibn Habab al-Akli narrated to us, he said: Malik ibn Anas narrated to me, he said: Alā' ibn Abdur-Rahman ibn Ya'qub, a freedman of 'Urwah, informed me from Abu Sa'id, the freedman of 'Amir ibn Fulān, or ibn Fulān, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to him: "What do you begin your prayer with?" He said: "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Ālamīn," until he completed it. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: " It is the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Qur'an that I have been given."
The narrator Abu Kuraib said: Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Abdul Hamid bin Ja'far, from Al-Ala bin Abdul Rahman bin Ya'qub, from his father, from Abu Huraira, from Abi, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Should I not teach you a Surah that was not revealed in the Torah, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Psalms, nor in the Criterion that is like it?" I said: Yes, he said: "I hope that you will not leave from that door until you learn it." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up and I stood with him, and he began talking to me with his hand in my hand, and I started to slow down because I disliked for him to leave before he informed me about it. When he got close to the door, I said: O Messenger of Allah, the Surah that you promised me, he said: " How do you recite when you open the prayer? I said: I recited the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatiha), he said: "It is it, and it is the seven oft-repeated verses which Allah, the Exalted, said (And indeed, We have given you, O Muhammad, seven of the often-repeated verses and the great Qur'an) - that which you have been given."
Abu Kuraib narrated to us, saying: Al-Muharibi told us, from Ibrahim ibn Al-Fadl Al-Madani, from Sa'id Al-Maqbari, from Abu Hurairah: That the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "The two rak'ahs in which there is no recitation are like the incomplete child (خِدَاجِ), two rak'ahs that are not completed. A man asked: What if I have nothing except Umm Al-Qur'an? He said: " It is sufficient for you; it is Umm Al-Qur'an, it is the seven oft-repeated verses."
Abu Kuraib narrated to us, he said: Ibn Numair narrated from Ibrahim bin Al-Fadl, from Al-Maqbari, from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The prayer unit in which Surah Al-Fatiha is not recited is like a deficient thing." I said to Abu Huraira: But if I only have Umm Al-Quran with me? He said: It is sufficient for you; it is the Mother of the Book, and Umm Al-Quran, and the seven repeated verses.
Abu Kuraib told me, he said: Khalid ibn Makhlad narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Al-'Alaa ibn Abdul-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: " By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, Allah has not revealed anything in the Torah, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Psalms, nor in the Criterion like it, meaning Umm Al-Quran, and indeed it is the seven oft-repeated verses that Allah, the Exalted, has given me."
We were informed by Yunus ibn Abdul A'la, who said: Ibn Wahb informed us, who said: Ibn Abi Zaeeb informed me, from Saeed Al-Maqbari, from Abu Huraira, from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, who said: "It is the Mother of the Book, it is the Opening of the Book, and it is the seven oft-repeated verses."
We were told by Al-Hasan bin Muhammad, who said: Yazid bin Harun and Shabib said: Ibn Abi Dhiyab informed us, from Al-Maqbari, from Abu Huraira, from the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding the opening of the Book: "It is the Opening of the Book, and it is the Seven of the Repeated Verses and the Great Qur'an."
Narrated Al-Hassan bin Muhammad: 'Ibn 'Afan narrated to us, and 'Abdul Rahman bin Ibrahim narrated to us, and Al-'Ala' narrated from his father, from Abu Huraira who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by Ubayy bin Ka'b and said: "Do you want me to teach you a Surah that has not been revealed in the Torah, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Psalms, nor in the Furqan like it?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "How do you recite in the prayer?" So I recited the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatiha) to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, there has been no Surah revealed in the Torah, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Psalms, nor in the Furqan like it. Indeed, it is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Great Qur'an."
Ibn Al-Muthanna narrated to us, he said: Wahb bin Jarir narrated to us, he said: Saeed bin Habeeb narrated to us, from Hafs bin Aasim, from Abu Saeed Al-Mualla, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) called him while he was praying, so he prayed and then came to him, and he said: "What prevented you from answering me?" He said: "I was praying." He said: "Did not Allah say: O you who have believed, respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life?" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: " I will teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur'an. It seemed that he explained it or forgot, so I said: O Messenger of Allah, what you said? He said: "Alhamdulillah Rabbil 'Alamin; it is the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Qur'an that I have been given."
If what we have said is correct regarding the interpretation of this matter, to which we have cited evidence, then it is necessary that the "Muthani" refers to the entirety of the Quran. Thus, the meaning of the statement becomes: "Indeed, We have given you seven verses that complement each other." If that is the case, then "Muthani" is the plural of "Muthana," and the verses of the Quran can be described as such because some of them complement each other, and some follow each other with sections that separate them. One can identify the end of a verse and the beginning of the next, as Allah, Exalted is He, described it, saying: "Allah has sent down the best narration, a Book consistent, repeating..." and it causes the skin of those who fear their Lord to shiver. It may also be that its meaning is, as said by Ibn Abbas and Al-Dahhak, that it was called "Muthani" because the stories and news within it are repeated time and again. And we have mentioned the saying of Al-Hasan Al-Basri that they were named "Muthani" because they are recited in every reading, and the saying of Ibn Abbas that they were called "Muthani" because Allah, Exalted is He, reserved it for Muhammad (peace be upon him) alone and did not give it to other prophets.
And some of the people of Arabic claim that it was named Al-Mathani (The Repeated) because it contains "The Most Merciful, The Most Compassionate" twice, and that it is repeated in every surah, meaning: Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim.
As for the interpretation that we have chosen regarding that, it is one of the sayings of Ibn Abbas, and it is the saying of Tawus, Mujahid, and Abu Malik, and we have mentioned that before.
As for His saying ( AND THE GREAT QUR'AN ), the Qur'an is an addition to the seven, meaning: Indeed, We have given you seven verses from the Qur'an, along with other parts of the entire Qur'an.
As Muhammad bin Amr narrated to me, he said: Abu Asim narrated to us, he said: Isa narrated to me, and Al-Harith narrated to me, he said: Al-Hasan narrated to me, he said: Warkaa' all narrated from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, about His saying ( AND THE GLORIOUS QUR'AN ) he said: Its entirety: meaning the entirety of the Quran along with the seven of Al-Mathani.
I was informed by Al-Hussein, who said: I heard Abu Ma'adh say: Our narrator was Ubaid, who said: I heard Al-Dhahak saying regarding His words ( وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ ) meaning: the entire Book.
