6The meaning of the verse: "By your Lord, We will surely question them all."
The meaning of Allah's saying: "So by your Lord, We will surely ask them all" is that We will ask these mentioned ones about what they did in the worldly life. In Sahih al-Bukhari: Several scholars said regarding His saying: "So by your Lord, We will surely ask them all about what they used to do," regarding the declaration of "There is no deity but Allah."
I said: This has been narrated as a raised narration. Al-Tirmidhi the Wise narrated that Al-Jarood ibn Ma'adh said: Al-Fadl ibn Musa narrated to us from Sharik from Layth from Bashir ibn Nahik from Anas ibn Malik from the Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - in His saying: "By your Lord, We will surely question them all about what they used to do." He said: About the statement "There is no deity but Allah." Abu Abdullah said: Its meaning to us is about the sincerity of "There is no deity but Allah" and fulfilling it; this is because Allah - the Exalted - mentioned in His revelation the work, saying: "About what they used to do," and did not say "About what they used to say." And it may be that speech can also be the work of the tongue, but the meaning is what the people of language know, that saying is saying and action is action. The Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - said: About "There is no deity but Allah," meaning about fulfilling it and the truth of its saying. As Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: "Faith is not about adornment, nor is religion about wishing, but it is what settles in the hearts and is verified by actions." This is why the Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - said: "Whoever says 'There is no deity but Allah' sincerely will enter Paradise." It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what is its sincerity? He said: "To prevent it from the prohibitions of Allah." Narrated by Zayd ibn Arqam. And he also said: The Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - said: "Indeed, Allah has commanded me that no one from my nation comes to me with 'There is no deity but Allah' without mixing it with anything except that Paradise is obligatory for him." They said: O Messenger of Allah, what is it that mixes with 'There is no deity but Allah'? He said: "Desire for the worldly life, collecting it, and holding it back; they say the sayings of the prophets and perform the actions of the tyrants." And Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - said: "There is no deity but Allah prevents the servants from the anger of Allah as long as they do not prefer the deals of their worldly life over their religion. But when they prefer the deals of their worldly life over their religion, then when they say 'There is no deity but Allah,' it is returned to them, and Allah says: 'You have lied.'" Its chains are in the rare essentials.
I said: The verse in its generality indicates the questioning of all, whether they are disbelievers or believers, except for those who enter Paradise without accountability, as explained in the book ( Al-Tadhkirah ). If it is said: Will the disbeliever be questioned and held accountable? We say: There is a disagreement on this matter, and we mentioned it in Al-Tadhkirah. What appears to indicate his questioning is the verse and His saying: "And stop them; for they will be questioned" and His saying: "Indeed, to Us is their return, and indeed, upon Us is their account." If it is said: Allah, the Exalted, said: "And the criminals will not be asked about their sins" and He said: "On that Day, no human will be asked about his sin, nor a jinn," and He said: "And Allah will not speak to them," and He said: "Indeed, they will be veiled from their Lord that Day." We say: The Day of Resurrection has different stations; a station where there is questioning and speaking, and a station where that does not occur. Al-Kirmi said: The Day of Resurrection has stations, some of which involve questioning, and some of which do not. Ibn Abbas said: "They will not be asked a question of inquiry and investigation: Did you do such and such? Because Allah is All-Knowing of everything, but they will be asked a question of reproach and admonition, where He will say to them: Why did you disobey the Quran, and what is your excuse regarding it?" Qutrub relied on this statement. It is said: "We will certainly question them all" meaning the accountable believers; as explained by his saying, the Exalted: "Then you will surely be questioned that Day about the pleasure." The notion of generality is preferable, as has been mentioned. And Allah knows best.
